Face Maintenance | My First Facial

Skincare | Facial Feature Tamarind

When is the right time to indulge in your first facial? As a hormonal teen, a twenty-something blessed with a crystal clear complexion, or after two years of misdiagnosed dermatological issues? In my case, I went with the latter. *Humble brag* I had damn near perfect skin during my peers pimple plagued teenaged into early adulthood. Back then, I wouldn't have appreciated the benefits and baby skin glow of a luxe facial. But after struggling with skin issues including but not limited to adult onset eczema for two plus years, I finally pooped my facial cherry.

I knew there was only one person to go to, Michaela— an Oakland esthetician and beauty guru specializing in organic skincare, facials, and brow and lash treatments. Years before my first official appointment with Mickey, she guided me through potential flare up trigger ingredients and suggested some of the best products in my current daily regimen. After getting my eczema cleared up, I scheduled a facial at her solo spa Oloorea located in the MacArthur Annex!

Mickey's been providing quality skincare focused on clean, natural, results oriented treatments and products for almost a decade. With an extensive background in human biology and nutrition, her skills are grounded in science. For Mickey, skincare rituals are a potent ingredient to maintaining overall health. I knew that even with my sensitive, highly reactive skin— I was in expert hands with Michaela.

I started by stripping down to my skivvies and crawling onto her cozy table. After I told her my sensitivities to ingredients like sulfates and salicylic acid, she asked me about my current beauty regimen. I broke down my morning and evening routines and found that for minor pigmentation propping up around my eyes, that vitamin c serum would be most effective and only needs to be applied every two days as it stays within hour system for 48-72 hours. I also found that I my still twenty-something skin did not yet need a strict regimen of retinoids and would be better served by nighttime lactic acid masks throughout the week— a gentler means of resurfacing skin cells than retinoids for my eczema prone face (retinoids have been known to trigger eczema flare ups). Mickey used true botanicals resurfacing face mask during my treatment and suggested using the organic mask for two minutes only every other night to help keep my complexion clear and radiant.

The rest is history—a relaxing hour of facial massage, steam, and much needed therapy for my face and mind. I have had a handful of massages in my life with mostly mixed results, but I've gotta say— I would choose a quality facial over a relaxing massage any day. Especially since I got scalp and shoulder massage as a part of the facial. I highly suggest a spring facial to sluff off winter build up and start off the season fresh faced and glowing. Thanks to Mickey's skilled hands, I left without a flare up and full of knowledge and some much needed TLC. You can bet I'll be indulging in a facial every season from now on. I'm hooked!
