Meet Blake of Star Moon Sun

HEY BLAKE! YOU’RE A PRACTICING ARCHETYPAL DIVINER SPECIALIZING IN ASTROLOGY AND TAROT AND THE OWNER OF STAR MOON SUN. WHEN DID YOU KNOW ASTROLOGY AND DIVINATION WERE YOUR PATH AND PASSION?

I knew Astrology and Divination was my passion from a fairly young age, my grandmother was an Astrologer and my first teacher. I honestly did not know it was my path up until a few years ago. I wanted my path to be a variety of things, and as it turns out, it’s not necessarily what I want, but it is how I am of maximum service that is truly important.

HOW DID YOU LEARN THE IN’S AND OUT’S OF ASTROLOGY AND DIVINATION?

I learned the in’s and out’s of Astrology from reading—lots and lots of reading. I then received a Masters in Philosophy + Religion at CIIS where I focused on Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness. This is also where I was able to take a deep dive into Archetypal Astrology and built a foundation that grounds my practice today.

WHAT INSPIRED THE NAME STAR SUN MOON?

It was actually a three card Tarot spread that I pulled one morning years and years ago. I pulled The Star, The Moon, and The Sun. These three are all Major Arcana cards in the Tarot and are number seventeen, eighteen, and nineteen respectively—meaning I pulled them in order. I always kept this spread in my head because it was so impactful in my life and when it came time to pick a name Star • Moon • Sun just seemed so natural.

HOW DID YOU END UP IN SONOMA COUNTY?

I actually grew up here! I moved away right after graduating from Analy thinking I would never return. Honestly though, this place has a magic that I cannot deny... I have no plans of ever  leaving again.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE LOCAL HAUNTS? ANY CAFES OR RESTAURANTS YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT? WHAT’S YOUR GO TO ORDER?

I am fairly obsessed with the Kouign Amann from Pascaline. I absolutely love the Tumeric Latte at Retrograde. The Donburi from Ramen Gaijin always seems to hit the spot. And I would have to say that I could not live with out Screamin’ Mimis—I’m all about the local Strawberry on a sugar cone!!!

Meet Shelby of Sparrow Hair Co And Apothecary

HEY SHELBY! YOU’RE THE OWNER OF SPARROW HAIR CO AS WELL AS A WONDERFUL HAIR STYLIST. HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE INDUSTRY? HOW DID YOU KNOW HAIR WAS YOUR PASSION?

Thank you, That’s such a sweet compliment! I grew up with a hairstylist grandmother and a few aunts who owned their own salons. So of course, when I was little I would play “salon” with my cousins and I’d even sweep and tidy up the perm rods, color boxes—always organising their salons! I had the best time in those spaces, watching the ladies getting their hair rolled, cut, and colored. The tools intrigued me, but the smells....Woooooooo! Not so much.

I knew I wanted to be a stylist from a very young age, and after high school went to the JC for a few years, only to find myself finally enrolled at Redwood Empire Beauty College. I loved cosmetology school, and right out of graduation worked as an assistant at J Leonard Salon. I became a full time stylist after a few years and learned so much in my 23 years employed there (thank you Jeff!) that I was finally ready to spread my wings and look for my own salon. I moved over to my girlfriend Vanessa’s Honeycomb salon for a year to get comfortable and learn how to be my own boss, and then, when I felt brave, bought my Aunt’s hair salon. I’m so thrilled with the space that I’ve created and love the energy of my small little eco-friendly salon. I adore my coworkers and we have the best times working together. Sparrow really is my home away from home, when I’m working there with my clients and coworkers, it really is my happy place.

WE LOVE THE NAME OF YOUR SALON—SPARROW—WHAT INSPIRED THE NAME?

Well it’s a long and silly story really. Growing up in the area, and being from a dairy family, I’ve always loved the barns and all of the barn swallows. My grandparents had a dairy ranch on Lakeville Highway and one of my favorite memories every year was the mud nests that the swallows would swift in & out of—like they were a part of the family. I’m sure my grandparents didn’t appreciate those mud homes under their eaves, but I always loved that they made themselves at home. Watching their flight patterns over the fields was magical!

Years later, some coworkers and I decided to get matching tattoos while visiting Barcelona, Spain. We all chose this little bird, a swallow? A sparrow? Not sure, it’s a combo of both, but I love what it represents. The rigors of travel, the ability to adapt, to make your home & family where needed, and loyalty. It really speaks to my heart. So I chose to name the salon Sparrow, honoring that meaning. (And really, swallow salon just doesn’t sound all that proper, now does it?!?)

HOW DID YOU END UP IN SONOMA COUNTY?

I grew up here! Born & bred Sonoma County native. My parents divorced when I was small, so I spent my life between homes in Santa Rosa and the rural west side of Petaluma. Sonoma County really has the best of everything! I still love it around here.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE LOCAL HAUNTS? ANY CAFES OR RESTAURANTS YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT? WHAT’S YOUR GO TO ORDER?

Well...I’m a caffeine junkie, so I pretty much always have an almond milk latte or an iced matcha from Acre or The Trailhouse in hand. My favorite cafes & restaurants are The Spinster Sisters for a macro bowl, South A scramble, or pretty much anything Laz cooks up special for me.

Bird & Bottle, for the smokey poke & an Aperol spritz.

I love the avocado toast, and pretty much everything at The Pharmacy, The breakfast wraps, grain bowls & custom salads at Zoftig.

Beignet and roast beef sandwiches at Parish...and of course I’m super excited to enjoy a plate of smoked chicken nachos at the newly opened Sweet Tea’s in Windsor. We really miss that place!

But if you really want to know what I can’t live without... tacos. We love Santa Rosa taqueria, as well as El Roy’s, and el Molino Central. Tacos. Tacos. Tacos.

In Sebastopol I’m a huge fan of the fish tacos & that amazing side salad at Handline, and a macro bowl at Lowell’s. My caffeinated treat is always a visit to Retrograde Roasters for a matcha or a charcoal rose latte. A cookie at the Sebastopol Cookie Co and a visit with Danielle at Littlefour to round out a fun day exploring with my adorable daughter.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE SPOT TO EXPLORE AND RECHARGE IN SONOMA COUNTY?

I grew up living between my parents homes in Petaluma and Santa Rosa, but my favorite place to recharge and explore has to be Petaluma, it really is the hometown I hold dear. So many beautiful open spaces to enjoy— like the antique shopping downtown and great locally owned restaurants, food trucks, and cafes. There’s something magical about the energy of the river running through town—always changing with the tide—that still evokes the feeling of home to me.

WHO’S YOUR FAVORITE DESIGNER AT TAMARIND AND WHY?

I adore the handmade leather pouches and bags from my friend Chantal Garayalde, her leathers are dreamy, and the metal adornments are so enticing. I love my Tysa jumpsuit, I lived in it all summer. And OMG those Baserange velour sweatshirts, I need one in every color!

IF YOU HAD TO PICK ONE ITEM OF CLOTHING YOU COULDN’T LIVE WITHOUT, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

My black jeans! Any style, wide leg, cigarette, boyfriend.. but always high waisted! And my checkered vans.... sorry that’s 2.
