Cinema Beneath The Stars
There is a nostalgic allure to drive-ins, a bygone escape that withstood the test of time. Wear worn screens surrounded by stars. They’re enchanting and practical. At the drive-in, everyone is welcome – from hormonal herds of teens, to sleeping newborn babes. The chaos or solitude is secluded to your car. My sister piles pajama clad kids in the car and sticks around till the last one knocks out. While I prefer to corral a carload of friends, grab some In-N-Out, and share a few drinks while watching the feature. At the drive-in, movie magic is as luxe or laid-back as you make it.
We took a drive over to Concord in the East bay to channel some summer lovin’ ala Grease at one of the Bay Area’s only surviving drive-ins— The Solano Theatre. The previously shuttered historical slice of Americana was brought back to life by West Wind Theatres. Their dedication to modern technology and quality cinema with a relaxed old-school ambiance makes The Solano Drive-In our go-to summer escape come nightfall. And at $8 a head on regular nights, $5.25 a head on Tuesday family fun nights (kids always $1.25 age 5 to 11 + children under 4 free), and special double feature showings (2 flicks for the price of 1!) it’s a sweet summer deal for cinema beneath the stars. Check out our favorite nooks and crannies at the outdoor theatre along with our laid back summer styles!
Pink Ladies
Channel Rizzo and her gal pals in Iro's blush leather jacket. It's a pink ladies, T bird's mash-up made for a feminine badass. Flash a hint of bare back with a romantic ruffle for some subtle sex appeal ala Ulla Johnson, and upgrade your high waisted jeans with a Mother denim cropped wide leg for some summer lovin air ventilation.
Not Your Average T
I have a feeling that "Cha Cha"— aka "the best dancer at St. Bernadette's"— would slay in this crackled, two-toned maxi T-shirt dress! The bleached out silhouette side panels are made for hip swaying, while the cozy cut and jersey knit make this our go to laid-back cool ensemble for some casual car cinema.
Slip Into Velvet
Remember that Pink Ladies slumber party? The one where Sandy gets her ears pierced by Frenchy then pukes... well this is our take on PJ party delicates ideal for girl gang late-night hangs or shimmying down the drain pipe and hoping in the car with Kenickie. Your welcome.
All Black Everything!
We couldn't go to the drive-in without a classic T-bird's "bad" Sandy look! Blend into the night or stand out in the bright light snack shake in an all black get up. Add a pop of color with your favorite accessory to keep it fresh.
Cult Classics
You can't go wrong with a classic motorcycle leather jacket and breton stripes. Especially Iro's buttery soft all season wardrobe essential(—scroll up to peep their blush leather style if black ain't your vibe.) Mix nautical with some badass threads for a blend of Letterman's prep meets T-bird's swagger ala Danny Zuko's manny layers and talents (remember...he "lettered in track")! We're hopelessly devoted to this classic duo.
Snack Attack
Show off that skin tight high waist denim with a tie front top ala Marty Maraschino ("like the cherry") for a salty sweet combo that rivals our sour patch + popcorn addiction. Just make sure not to spill the beans on Rizzo's unplanned pregnancy cause Loose lips sink ships my friends.
Red Hot
Cool off with a cold beverage and a bright cropped top to beat the summertime heat pre and post sunset. Rock button-up jeans with some attitude, but don't take yourself too seriously. You are at the drive-in after all!
